The Situation in Pennsylvania
- In Pennsylvania in 2003, there were 1577 motor vehicle accident fatalities (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2004).
- One hundred and fifty-six of those fatalities (9.9%) were motorcyclists.
- In the same year there were 250,000 registered motorcycles, making the fatality rate 5.36 per every 10,000 vehicles (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2004).
- On September 4, 2003 Pennsylvania weakened its helmet law, allowing all riders ages 18 and older, with more than two years of riding experience to not wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle.
